Project description

This Stafford, VA pool project combines a freeform main pool with a raised spa, an elevated tanning ledge, and a raised bond beam. An 8-foot rain descent, two fire bowls, Walnut Beige travertine coping, and stone veneer bring the water, fire, and masonry details into one coordinated design.

What features define this Stafford pool?

  • Freeform pool layout
  • Raised spa
  • Elevated tanning ledge with a cascade into the main pool
  • Raised bond beam with a custom 8-foot rain descent
  • Two fire bowls positioned at the ends of the raised beam
  • Walnut Beige travertine coping and stone veneer

Together, these elements create distinct areas for swimming, shallow-water lounging, and spa use while keeping the project visually connected.

How does the elevated tanning ledge work?

The tanning ledge sits above the main pool instead of at the same water level. This separates the shallow ledge from activity in the lower pool. The change in elevation also serves a second purpose: water cascades from the ledge into the main pool, turning the transition between levels into an active water feature.

Because the ledge is incorporated into the pool layout, the cascade reads as part of the overall design rather than as a separate decorative addition.

How are the rain descent and fire bowls arranged?

A raised bond beam runs along the upper tanning ledge and supports the custom 8-foot rain descent. The rain descent sends a broad stream of water from the beam into the pool below. A fire bowl sits at each end of the raised beam, placing fire and moving water within the same view.

The result is a single focal area made from three connected components: the elevated ledge, the falling water, and the paired fire features.

What materials unify the pool design?

Walnut Beige travertine is used for the pool coping. Stone veneer finishes the raised spa, elevated tanning ledge, and raised bond beam. Repeating the veneer across the vertical surfaces gives the elevated features a consistent material palette and frames the rain descent and fire bowls.

Why use custom concrete pool construction for this design?

The Pool Company Construction builds inground pools with dry shotcrete, a form of concrete applied to create the pool shell. Concrete construction supports customized shapes and integrated changes in elevation, which makes it well suited to a design that combines a freeform pool, raised spa, elevated ledge, and raised bond beam.

Each feature can be planned as part of the pool structure, allowing the water features and masonry finishes to work with the layout. Learn more about our custom swimming pool construction process.
